American Birkebeiner Half Marathon

This weekend we had the pleasure of enjoying Paige Schember’s company. Paige drove from college at St. Olaf to Hayward for some training and the American Birkebeiner Half Marathon. After the rain Hayward had been getting most week we were pleased with the weather on Saturday. It was perfect for running, cloudy with temperatures around 50ᵒ Fahrenheit.

As always, running on the birkie trail was very enjoyable, especially with the current fall colors. Paige and I started out fairly conservative due to our lack of racing such high mileage. Since neither of us were sure what to expect we decided it was best to start out slower and pick up the pace if we were feeling good. We managed to stick together almost half of the race. With all of the hills on our way to High Point Paige and I became separated. Eventually we finished third and fourteenth in the women’s race, placing first and second in our age class! I think it’s safe to say that we were both happy with our efforts. Results can be found at:

Once we had cooled down we helped clean up the finish area and take down signs on the trail. It was a great day with great company. Thanks to the American Birkebeiner Ski Foundation for putting on the event and all the volunteers that helped! We were thrilled to be part of such a great community experience!
